FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cedarburg, WI — School Photographers of America (SPOA) announced recipients of its inaugural SPOA Gallery, recognizing high school yearbooks that exemplify excellence in student photography, visual storytelling and journalistic practice.
Scholastic journalism associations have long awarded student media based on adherence to standards in storytelling, design, reporting and photography. The SPOA Gallery awards are unique in that the first round of judging focused on how student photography drives the content of the publications. Then, yearbooks were evaluated against less visual journalism standards.
“The Gallery was created to celebrate the remarkable work happening in yearbook programs across the country,” said Stephanie Hayes, executive director of SPOA. “The level of creativity, thoughtfulness and storytelling represented by this year’s entries is inspiring. These students aren’t simply documenting a school year; they’re preserving history through the eyes of their classmates.”
Steve Kent, chair of the SPOA Yearbook Committee, said the Gallery honors thoughtful decisions transforming photographs into lasting stories.
“Great yearbooks don’t happen by accident. They happen on purpose,” he said. "They happen because talented students and dedicated educators make thousands of intentional decisions throughout the year. Every image has a purpose. Every spread tells a story. Every publication reflects a commitment to documenting school life with creativity, authenticity and journalistic integrity. The Gallery recognizes that commitment and celebrates the students who understand the best yearbooks don’t simply record history. They help define it.”
SPOA established these awards to recognize contemporary student publications demonstrating excellence in photography, storytelling and visual journalism while encouraging young journalists to continue to innovate their publications to stay relevant to the student experience.
